You say goodbye and I say hello*

This month has been pretty hectic for me. I try to absorb the imagery that flies past in space-time (whoa!).

Yes, I am getting ready to return home and it's causing lots of work. It's also seeing me trying to capture the year that was.

And I tell you, trying to pack things that were with you for a year in 2 suitcases is no joke. So as I pack as much I can, I also leave things that can be easily replaced. Not all things are material, and some things have to be replaced. A snapshot from my list:

Things to leave/pickup:

Fake accent/Inglish
Yes, I'll have to soon get out of the forced habit of rolling over my words. I'll have to soon unleash my natural inclination to sit and do a squat on every R in each word.

Disciplined driving/Driving on the other side with the right amount of indiscipline:
Initially felt like a moron waiting at the red light with no one on any side. Now have to get out of the moronic habit. Back home, that thing is for the ads.

Hugging/Nodding
Going about hugging females indiscriminately gonna be a strict no-no {First this gonna should be replaced with a strict "is going to be"}. And yeah, I don't belong to the Indian P3 elite where hugging females is cool normal and hugging males is cool gay! Back to backslapping my buddies and nodding at others.

Hi! How are you?/ ???
Barking a "How are you?" at persons known and unknown has to cease promptly on landing at India. Studious indifference to people who stare, walk-by, travel with, is gonna (dammit) be the norm.

Starbucks coffee/tea in a glAAs
It took only a day or two to get used to watery decoction in a high collins like container with very little milk (Half & Half to boot). No more dodging the low fat milk and trying to get real healthy milk. But ofcourse Starbucks will be sorely missed. It's pretty much high-end back there. Moi part of hoi-polloi.

My cop-magnet car/My ruddy old bike
It has been definitely proved that my car is a cop magnet. Last week a cop pulled me over (as in several weeks before that) and asked to show my insurance for the Honda I drive. I politely told him that it's a Mercury upon which he left. They have to stop me even before deciding the offence! :-( But I have to leave this here and get on to my old love, my bike.

So if any of you find a bag trashed at the O'Hare containing words rolling over each other hugging other known words, spitting a "How are you?" from themselves while soggy with Starbucks coffee, you'd know who left that, won't ya?

* From the Beatles' song "Hello Goodbye" by Lennon/McCartney

OMG you're leaving for good? but atleast I don't see "blogging" among the things left behind at O'Hare :)
Just loved this list and luaghed over each one. esp the "hugging females indiscriminately gonna be a strict no-no" :))) and the cop magnet car. They really pulled you up for no reason and you didn't even sue the Chicago PD? That's another thing you'll have to leave behnd the urge to sue anyone and everyone around you and the expectation of having everything getting done on time.
GL with your move and do keep blogging.

The title had me confused- thought you were writing about leaving blogging or maybe 2006. Well written and funny! I know, the cultural disparities hit you but then again you'll be amazed at how li'l time it takes to feel like you never left that place..after all, it is home! And watch out when you go to ATM's too...any gesture of courtesy will be largely misundertood and people will just pass you not understanding why you are standing a feet away from the guy at the machine :) Happened to me a lot!
Anyway, keep us updated on how the move goes.

C(hicago2Chennai?)-ya! Nice compilation! Hope you'll continue blogging b'cos to us blogger pals, whether you are in this C or across the Sea, you'll only be a c(lick) away!
Good timing too that you are escaping the Chicago winter!

@m - It seems I left out trivial details like unregistered license plate and not working tail light. lol. Thanks for your wishes!

@orchid - The title refers to the fact even as I am saying Hello to the city, it's already goodbye time. Atleast that's what I meant
it to be. ;-)

@metoo - I wish it's Chicago to Chennai. Only a very short stay in Chennai. Onward to Indore. I've been blogging since I was in India. So we'll be in touch. :-)
And this is my second winter. So I've had my share! :-)

Young (?!)man ! You are sooo out of date ! Having returned (for good) from the land of 2% to Aavin milk a few years back, I can vouch for the fact that chennai is more chicago than chicago itself. So be prepared for some culture shock ! A mere look at the hoardings where film heroes routinely chew on the heroine's lips is sufficient to give you a heart attack.
So welcome to the land of variety, where madisaars co-exist with microminis.

You’re going home to sunshine and warmth? I’m so jealous!

Seriously, I hope you'll continue blogging, and won’t let silly excuses like work, marriage, a life, etc. get in the way.

All the best!

Dude you missed few things that you may think leaving back..

1. Buying Music CDs... MP3 is easily available in India.. that too free of Cost..
2. Thinking of driving over 100 MPH on Indian Roads...
3. Explaining your tour details to a COP while he is giving a ticket..
4. Planning a road trip with a patch like Mob to Montras.. and asking me to drive it at 2:00 in the night with a Deep valley on one side and a steep mountain on other..

So on and so forth..

just kidding... nice article though.. missing most of them .. especially the Coffee.

have fun..

@ommachi - !!

@viewer - :-) More of a reminder.

@terri - I started my blogging while in India and I shall assure no silly excuses like you mentioned shall prevent me! LOL.

@rohan - I've been away from home even before that, and at a young age too. So no probs there. And it'll be a measly 2 weeks at home before I head to my work location far north of my hometown. :-(
Yes, would love to meet you and start the Tendulkar argument in person! :-)

@rock - You evoke nice memories, Amol. You shouldn't have gone back so soon. Any updates on your marriage?
